  2.           * * *   System requirements for AUTOSIG Version 6.3   * * *
  3.  
  4.         AUTOSIG (ATO) is the original PC program written for the PC and
  5.         Compuserve.  It not only automates forums functions, including
  6.         the automation of downloading files, it also has the ability to
  7.         run scripts.  Scripts make ATO useful in all CompuServe areas.
  8.  
  9.         ATO is free.  There are no charges or other restrictive
  10.         requirements (though we do ask that you enjoy it!).  All you
  11.         need to do is download the files, make several adjustments in
  12.         your forum options, and you're ready to enjoy the benefits of
  13.         CompuServe without the price of on-line interactive sessions.
  14.         Autosig makes the best of both worlds:  the benefits of
  15.         multiuser mainframes and the benefits of a personal computer.

  18.                      * * *   HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS   * * *
  19.  
  20.         In general AUTOSIG (ATO) version 6.3 requires the following
  21.         equipment configuration:
  22.  
  23.          o  an IBM PC, XT, AT, PS/2 or close compatible.
  24.          o  at least 256K of available memory.
  25.          o  a hard disk is recommended, but not required.
  26.          o  a Hayes command set compatible modem
  27.          o  optional mouse
  28.          o  display adapter and monitor
  29.  
  30.    -    ATO has been tested on the Compaq portable, Tandy machines,
  31.         Toshiba laptops, the Leading Edge, the Compaq high-end machines,
  32.         the AST Premium line, and a number of compatibles too numerous
  33.         to mention.  All close compatibles will probably work, but be
  34.         sure to check the user's manual for various "switches" that
  35.         might be necessary.  ATO does not work on the Data General.
  36.  
  37.         ATO has NOT been tested on the PS/2 model 50Z.  Some of these
  38.         machines have reported problems with communications in general.
  39.         If you have access to a 50Z and try ATO, please let us know.

  41.         ATO is network, e.g. LANTASTIC, compatible, although it does not
  42.         allow the sharing of its files.
  43.  
  44.    -    ATO will no longer run on my 256k PCjr, so I am unable to
  45.         determine if it's suitable.
  46.  
  47.         About 256k of *free* memory is required.  More than 256k is
  48.         definitely better.  Use of the ATO PPN database processor
  49.         requires about 320K of available memory.  The total amount of
  50.         memory is somewhat dependent upon how many forums you use, the
  51.         number of message headers you want to mark, and some other
  52.         factors.

  54.    -    ATO requires at least 250K of disk space for its files. More
  55.         disk space is needed to hold message files and other files that
  56.         are to be downloaded.  A hard disk is not required, but it is
  57.         highly recommended.

  59.    -    A modem capable of autodialing is required.  If you're not
  60.         using a Hayes command set compatible modem, you'll need to be
  61.         familar with your modem's command codes in order to set it up.
  62.  
  63.         There is built-in support for accessing CompuServe through a
  64.         direct node and through Telenet and Tymnet.  Using ATO's script
  65.         language, you will be able to log on through virtually any
  66.         network, but it may require work on your part in determining
  67.         the correct sequence of prompts and responses.
  68.  
  69.         NOTE:  If you're using a machine running faster than 4.77 Mhz (a
  70.         standard PC),  ATO will NOT run with a Hayes 1200 baud
  71.         *internal* modem which has a ROM number of 139. This also
  72.         applies to modems that are direct copies.  ATOPAT.ARC in IBMCOM
  73.         library 1 has resolved this problem for most users, but do be
  74.         aware that you will need ATOPAT if you're using an internal
  75.         modem with a ROM version of 139.

  77.    -    ATO supports MS and Logitech compatible mouse input devices.
  78.  
  79.    -    ATO supports MDA, Hercules, CGA, EGA, and VGA displays. 25, 43,
  80.         and 50-line displays are supported for those display adapters
  81.         that offer such modes. Graphics is not used or required.

  84.                      * * *   SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS   * * *

  86.         In general, ATO requires the following software configuration:
  87.  
  88.          o  IBM PC DOS or MS DOS version 3.0 or later
  89.          o  no ill-behaved resident (TSR) programs
  90.          o  the AUTOSIG.EXE program
  91.  
  92.         DOS 3.0 or greater is recommended.  ATO will run fine on DOS 2.x
  93.         systems, but you may experience problems with the "Shell to DOS
  94.         feature" of ATO.  This is an incompatibility with the compiler
  95.         used to create the ATO executable program file and DOS 2.x.

  97.         ATO was developed with the MS BASIC PDS Version 7 compiler.
  98.  
  99.         ATO is DesqView and DoubleDOS aware.  It is also compatible with
  100.         many popular resident programs, but you may have certain memory
  101.         resident utilities installed that can cause problems.

  103.         Specifically, the Quadram clock sys driver (the one that goes in
  104.         your CONFIG.SYS file) causes problems.  Use the Quadram .COM
  105.         file in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file instead.  If you have problems,
  106.         try running ATO without any resident utilities installed.

  108.         ATO is compatible with RAM disks (like VDISK), disk caching
  109.         programs (like VCACHE), keyboard enhancers (like PCED), screen
  110.         enhancers (like Ultra Vision), print spoolers (like LTORQ and
  111.         PCACHE).

  113.         If you have a problem, PLEASE let us know in section 1 of
  114.         IBMCOM.  We can usually work it out but, if not, we need to know
  115.         of possible incompatibilities.  ATO is a group effort and we
  116.         appreciate and encourage hearing about your problems, solutions
  117.         and suggestions.

  120.                           * * *   FILES NEEDED   * * *

  122.         All AUTOSIG files are located in Library 1 of the IBM
  123.         Communications forum (GO IBMCOM).
  124.  
  125.         At minimum, you'll want to get ATO63A.EXE, which contains the
  126.         executable file and the help file, and ATODOC.EXE which contains
  127.         the documentation file.  These will get you going.  Both are
  128.         self-extracting archives.  When you run them, they tell you what
  129.         to do to install the files.
  130.  
  131.         Otherwise ATO, is "modular" in design, so you don't have to
  132.         download what you don't want or need.  However, you may find
  133.         that other programs, such as ACLS, ATOBRO, ATOADV, SETUP, and
  134.         DLSCAN, will greatly enhance your use of ATO.  Please note that
  135.         the latter files are entirely optional!
